a magnificent masterclass in sushi and cocktails
I really love to try new things so was thrilled when I bumped into Kouzu's 'Sushi and Cocktail Masterclass for 2'.
In a swanky Japanese restaurant in Victoria was the chance to have a hands-on lesson in the art of making sushi and cocktails. The class was composed of 10 of us and the 2 teachers - one who specialised in sushi and another in cocktails. One of the most charming aspects of the day was that it was made up of 5 couples. We didn't have too long with them but were able to have a great laugh.
While I'm completely hopeless in the kitchen, my partner is a natural so I had expected a lot of him. To our surprise (my relief) he was as bad as me, hahah. We couldn't believe it! Despite this, a light element of competition between the couples appeared pretty quickly and we were soon ranked bottom of the class. Hilarious! Although our sushi didn't quite look right, to our delight it still tasted delicious.
Once we were done with the sushi, we moved over to the bar where we were taught how to make 3 cocktails. We were told the ins and outs of cocktail-making by a brilliantly-animated bartender. Towards the end of the session we again competed with the other couples in creating the best espresso martini. We definitely didn't win that one either but were happy to not have come in last again.
We never really hang out with many other couples, for no reason at all, but this atmosphere really added to our experience. We were the youngest there by a little margin, with the eldest couple being perhaps 40 years senior, but this made for an excellent dynamic.
A fantastic day that we'll forever look back fondly on.
